2nd Semester Letter home (students were asked to get a parent signature and email address if possible):

Hello Parents and Guardians,
As we begin the second semester of school, there are a few things that we, Mr. Shields and Ms. Pollastro, would like to convey to you all. Many of the students have adjusted nicely to the demands of the high school coursework, but it is still nice to have a reminder and other resources available to students when they are absent (or absent-minded).

For this reason, we would like to remind you all of the website that we run for our classes: www.fortmath.com.

On this site parents and students can find a link to each teacher’s website and thus a link to the homework calendar that shows the homework assignments that are given each day, and we do mean each day! There are very few times we do not assign homework, so please take a look at the calendar to help remind your students of their work that is due.

Also, students will still be continuing with the stamp sheet as a record of their assignments every 2 weeks. The stamp sheets are brightly colored and the students should be writing the homework assignment in the left hand column to remind themselves each night what they are to do. We suggest that you ask to see the stamp sheet if you ever wonder what the homework is or if there is homework and you cannot access the website.

We would also like to share that we send out a weekly emails to inform parents of the upcoming events of class and the new topics the students are learning about each week. If you are interested in being on this email list, please fill out the bottom portion of this letter and have it returned to class. These email updates have been very helpful for many parents so far this year and it is one way that you can stay in contact with the teachers and know what is happening in class.

We wish you all a good second semester and look forward to seeing you at Student-Led Conferences. Student-Led Conferences are March 4th and 5th in the commons and Media Center. Please keep an eye out for this information as it is important for each student to complete this!
Also, this year is the first year of the High School Proficiency Exam. Every student in grades 9 and 10 are expected to take this exam. The test will take place on Tuesday April 13th. Please make sure your child is aware of this and they are in school on this day.

Thanks for all your hard work. We hope to hear from you throughout the semester.

Sincerely,

Julie Pollastro and Nathan Shields

For the introduction to Module 3, we used data from an experiment in which a Cheeto was burned (the book uses a nut); you can watch the video here.
